Providing a future

 

Since 1988 many Burmese have been forced to flee their homeland because of poverty and the impact of an abusive military dictatorship. The new government in recent months has taken major steps towards reforms. These changes are encouraging. But poverty is still a strong reality in Burma.


There are still over 10,000 Burmese refugees and asylum seekers in New Delhi.

 

While they are waiting for refugee status to be resettled in a new country, or to be able to go back in their country, they face harsh living conditions in New Delhi. Having a skill that will help them earn money for their families survival is essential.

 

Burma Assist, a non-political Scottish charity, is supporting the Dorcas Centre, a Burmese community tailoring training centre. It provides the skills and the self-confidence that is enabling the women to care for their families in New Delhi, and a new country when resettled, or perhaps one day in Burma.

 

After I completed the tailoring course it is not just my skills that have improved but it has contributed to the development of my personality. Now, I am confident to face the future… read more
