A Chin Burmese family share what life is like in Delhi.
Since this video was shot the numbers of Burmese in Delhi have risen - there are now over 7,500 people from Burma in Delhi
Due to ongoing human rights abuses, severe restrictions on basic freedoms, and widespread poverty many Burmese have had to flee from their home to Thailand, Malaysia and India.
In India over 70,000 people from Burma are living in uncertain conditions in the North East of India and in Delhi. The majority are from the ethnic nationalities (Chin, Kachin, Arakan, Mon).
In November 2009,
Refugees International (www.refugeesinternational.org) published a report on the situation, they concluded:
"Lack of status and vulnerability to discrimination have left most Chin refugees in India with indequate income to meet their basic housing, health, and education needs. UNHCR's limited role largely leaves Chin refugees to fend for themselves and leaves little to no social safety net for vulnerable refugees. While resettlement provides a lasting solution for a very few Chin refugees in India, the vast majority face long-term difficulites with no ability to return home in sight... The international community can and should do more to assist Chin and Burmese refugees in India."
